There are three things I thought I would never see in this industry: (a) receiving gemstone parcels in the US Mail from Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam, (b) dealing with a US$100 million dollar fraud fiasco involving a member of the feldspar group, and (c) writing a business article on fluorite as a revenue stream for jewelers. These are strange times indeed. However, with this edition of our newsletter all three of these have come true. Perhaps the third is not so strange if we think about it. Fluorite comes in a very unique set of rainbow colors that can contain more of the colors of the rainbow within one stone. as you see at left. In spite of its lack of hardness in a range that is normally accepted for a material to qualify as a gemstone, if set properly in pendants or earrings fluorite can become a major revenue stream if a jeweler just knows how to romance it. Indeed, when the concept was first presented to me I responded: Fabulous....FLOURITE??? But yes indeed, Fabulous Fluorite!

At left is one of the most amazingly beautiful gemstones, that is both abundant and affordable. Although named for the Amazon River, according to most sources it is not found anywhere near there. According to the book Exotic Gems by Renée Newman, GG (International Jewelry Publications, 2010, pp 134), one explanation says that it is named for Amazon warrior women from Greek mythology. That sounds pretty good to us so we are going with that one. The others seem far too scientific or historical to be much fun. Somehow warrior women roaming the Amazon River seems more romantic....at least to some of us with rather vivid imaginations and time to day dream. Warrior women, beautiful gemstone, important revenue stream for jewelers. Yep, we think this gemstone is just Amazing Amazonite!

In this day of having to get creative to maintain a marketing edge, we need to remember that what we like, our customers usually like also. Sometimes this allows us to get outside of the traditional boundaries of what is proper in a jewelry or gemstone operation and go for what is of interest to your clients rather than what is being represented to you as the "normal" inventory by the traditional industry media. For that reason, today we want to go a bit toward the collectors route of jewelry store inventory and talk about what we have phun in calling those Phantastic Phantoms!

Today we continue our efforts to help you become more profitable. Not based on some fairy tale expedition to some mystical Tibetan gemstone mine, but based on solid revenue streams generated by documented and established gemstones. Many of these you may have not considered due to lack of public familiarity, or perhaps you have simply overlooked them due to a lack of press coverage in the trade media. Either way, there are important revenue streams available to you through these gem materials that can help your bottom line. Today, we want to talk about the beautiful blue gemstone shown in today's banner! Surprise...it's Sodalite.

In the ongoing search for viable gemstone materials that offer beauty and affordable price points, variscite is often overlooked when it offers both. At the recent Tucson Gem Shows we had the pleasure to once again meet with our friends at Mia Mia Mining and Mfg. from whom we obtained some wonderful specimens of Lucin, Utah variscite that we would like to share with you today. These specimens were mined between 1960 and 1970 from the Turner Mine, at Lucin, Utah.

Over the past five years we have watched the developments surrounding the artificial color infusion of gemstones. The work of Ted Themelis has shown that gemstones of all types can be color infused with various materials under a variety of conditions, including far lower heat than was previously imagined as demonstrated by the Tibet andesine fiasco. During this time we have noticed certain indicators in gemstones treated with a color infusion process, such as the strange color zoning as seen in the tourmaline at left. This image from 2008 demonstrates color zoning that does not follow any particular pattern of crystal growth, but rather follows the pattern of surface reaching fissures and tubes.
