This gemology thing....its not rocket science, you know. And it's not some Magical Mystical Knowledge that some seem to treat as proprietary knowledge by charging huge amounts of money for the training. It's gemology, the study of gems. During our ISG Journey Thru Gemology presentations on Tuesday evenings we are traveling through the realm of gemology step by step, in a journey of fun and learning. Last Tuesday we studied the hydrothermal process of gemstone creation. And "creation" is the proper term, not synthetic. Creating gemstones in a lab is an art that must be learned and perfected using imagination and skill. Synthetic gemstones, by definition, do not really exist.

It's been almost 30 years since this industry planted the seeds of subterfuge and confusion when we abdicated our responsibility to be trained, professional jewelers and allowed a small group of unregulated diamond grading labs do our thinking for us. This was once an industry of professionals where, in order to even be in the business, jewelers were required to have the experience, knowledge, training and equipment to grade diamonds for themselves. Even working in a jewelry store, a new employee was not allowed keys to the diamond showcase until they got the needed experience and knowledge to make the proper presentations to diamond customers. Jewelry stores maintained customer loyalty by their in-house professional training, knowledge and equipment that they maintained as professional jewelers. This all changed when the industry stopped making the investment in time and money to be professional jewelers, and allowed this small group of unregulated gem labs to do our thinking for us. Rather than maintain responsibility for high standards of professional services, we sub-contracted out that responsibility to save time and money of maintaining those standards.

At the 2014 JCK Las Vegas Show we obtained a parcel of rubies that were properly disclosed as being lead filled natural rubies. In our initial show report we erroneously compared the price of these to a group of rubies sold on the internet by a major internet gemstone supplier. The error claimed was that their rubies were borax filled rubies rather than the lead filled rubies that we purchased. We have retracted the comparison as it was not a like/kind/quality comparison as claimed by the seller. However, when we went online at purchased the actual rubies being sold by this seller, we found that the rubies they were claiming to be borax filled rubies had other issues beyond the simply flux healing of natural rubies.
